Lumberton North Carolina Disaster Rebuild October 20 - 25, 2019

Nancy and I arrived in Lumberton on Thursday October 17th, and after getting our RV parked we went to visit the team that was working on Ms. Charlene’s house, as our team was going to take over the work from Vince and Diane who had plans for an early departure. They had repaired the kitchen floor and painted much of the kitchen and living room area during their time here. On Friday we visited another work site for our team to start.

On Saturday we welcomed Bob and Paige, Don and Paula, and Bridget. We also had Mike and Lee staying over from our first week. Saturday evening our team went to Pier 41 for a seafood dinner, which we enjoyed very much. Sunday evening we went to our host church Chestnut Street UMC for our team meeting.

Monday we sent Bob & Paige and Don & Paula to Ms. Amy mobile home to start the repairs there. Our scope of work include painting the second bathroom and fixing the door. They also have to repair popcorn on the ceilings and spray paint the ceilings which they accomplished by Tuesday afternoon. The next job was to repair a window in the master bedroom and repair places in the floor that had rotted out for water leaks. They cut luan to lay on the bedroom floor to give a good surface. The master bath also needs flooring and other repairs this next week.

The rest of the team went to Ms. Charlene’s home where we finished the painting in the hallway, tore out the carpet in the living room, laid luan in the kitchen, then fastened the cabinets in place before putting the counter top in. After the counter top was in Bridget and Mike started laying the vinyl laminate flooring, Lee worked on replacing the outlets and switches, Nancy caulked where needed and cleaned equipment we were finished using. Dennis assisted with the floor and installed trim were needed. It was a great week at both homes.

Tuesday we gathered at the church to celebrate Paige’s birthday with a potluck. Wednesday and Thursday found both Paula and Paige fighting the effects from colds that were getting worse. Most of the team went to Golden Corral for dinner on Thursday to say our goodbyes to Mike and Lee and Bridget as they were leaving the team. Friday evening Bob & Paige and Dennis & Nancy went to the church for the volunteer appreciation dinner that UMCOR was hosting. Next week we add 3 new rigs to our team and will have 12 NOMADS here at work.

We have posted a blog about our work with pictures for the week at:
