A Message From Sumatanga
Amanda Lamb, Director of Hospitality and Program
We are just one month away from Summer Camp 2016 here at Sumatanga! Many would say that summer is our busiest time of year, however, retreat season is still in full swing and we are quite busy, as we have recently had as many as 9 different retreat groups here in one weekend.
To name a few, we’ve had college groups, a number of confirmation groups, several Emmaus walks, and the second Celebrate and Recreate Retreat for families. We’ve enjoyed hosting the third of eight weeklong Academy events across two years, and been able to spend a week with the North Alabama Sweet Spirits. Sumatanga also just put on its first of many Silent Retreats, providing people with the opportunity to discover how challenging and wonderful it is to be silent for 40+ hours. The next one will be in August, so keep an eye out for those dates to pop up on our website and join us for a quiet and contemplative getaway!
In preparation for summer camp, our Summer Leadership Team just spent a weekend at camp, getting ready to step into their roles for the summer, and our Summer Camp Design Team met for the last time before camp begins.
Looking ahead, we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of brand new bunk beds for the Lodge, which will be here on May 4th, when the ten incredible NOMADS we have staying with us are going to help us put them together in time for summer camp!  Sumatanga Work Day is coming up on May 7th, and we‘ll have many volunteers here to give of their time and service to help us with spring cleaning and prepping for the summer. Then, on May 23rd the Summer Camp Staff arrive for two weeks of intense staff training.
Summer camp has been such a huge part of my life as I’m sure it has for many of you as well. So, I hope that you will partner with me in prayer as we usher in summer 2016.
The weather is warm and camp is beautiful this time of year, so stop by and say hi!
Leigh Ann Farrington, Interim Summer Camp Director
Sumatanga Family and Friends,
I’m super excited about the Summer Camp Program and the privilege of being the 2016 Summer Camp Interim Director! My name is Leigh Ann Farrington. I began serving Sumatanga in 1992 as a volunteer counselor for Elementary Camp 4 and this summer I will send my own child to Elementary Camp for the first time. How time flies…
Many of my best friends (and even my husband) are folks I met right here at Sumatanga. As I look around the state, some of the best pastors and lay church leaders in our Conferences cut their teeth as campers and counselors at camp. And many of them are still volunteering as directors, retreat leaders and volunteers today. I’m excited about serving in the place where God fed my own soul and helped to define my own calling over 20 years ago. And I look forward this summer to seeing how God blesses you and your children too.
Looking For A Summer Job That Can Change Your Life?
Sumatanga is still looking for a few more young adults with a love of the outdoors, an enthusiasm for serving others, and a passion for serving Christ.  We have a few more positions available for male counselors and for Summer Operational Staff.  To apply to be a part of our summer team, please visit our website at www.sumatanga.org or contact Leigh Ann Farrington at sumatangacamps@gmail.com.
Pray For Our Summer Camp Staff
As our Summer Camp Staff prepare for arrival and 2 weeks of training, we invite you to join us in prayer.  Please lift these individuals up daily, pray for safety, pray for wisdom in leadership, pray that they have fun!  And you can support the ministry of Sumatanga all summer long by praying for our programs, the children, youth, and adults who will be participating, and our staff.  We covet your prayers as we enter the summer season!
Volunteer Spotlight
Nomads On a Mission Active in Divine Service -- NOMADS provide volunteer labor for United Methodist organizations.  NOMADS demonstrate God's love through their work and by listening to the people with whom they work.  They do new construction, remodeling, and repairs for churches, children's homes, camps, colleges, outreach missions, and disaster rebuilding.  Team members do maintenance, cleaning, painting, electrical, drywall, sewing, flooring. With God's help, NOMADS pretty much do it all!
The NOMADS are currently at Sumatanga for a 3 week visit, and have been working hard to help the staff prepare for the summer camping season.  They've spent a lot of time disassembling the old metal bunk beds in the lodge and preparing the rooms for the new beds.  They have also helped continue the work on Suther, and have made quite a bit of progress with that.
We can't thank the NOMADS enough for their commitment to serving Camp Sumatanga!
Our Mission
