Weekly Report Team Hattiesburg 11-5-17

Saturday, October 28, we welcomed Kitty and John Hahn to Hattiesburg and Sunday, Avis and Gary Norton arrived.  Jo and Art Savoy left on Friday, 10/27.  Because Carol Kuiper’s father fell and was not doing well, she and Marty had to leave on Tuesday 10/31. Saturday, Mary Ann, Carol, and Carolyn went shopping for candy and decorations for Trunk or Treat.  Oak Grove UMC, where we are parked, has Trunk or Treat for the community.  It is like a carnival!  They had a blow up slide and also a blow up...

Rebuilding Continues in Oklahoma 11-3-17

The Oklahoma Disaster Rebuild project just completed the 4th and 5th weeks of this project, completing one home and starting work on two others. Week 4 was augmented by an extra pair of hands as John and Sue Hunter asked to stay another week, and there was room and plenty of work. All three homes being worked on were damaged in the 2015 flood, with the first home being empty since the event. That home is now ready for the family to move back in. Disaster Rebuilding in Hattiesburg 10-28-17

Tomorrow we will dress up our Ford Flex for Trunk or Treat at the church.   Last Saturday Carolyn sewed with some of the ladies at the church, making dresses for girls in Honduras.  The dresses start out with a t-shirt.  Then we gather a larger “tube” of material, hem it, gather it, and sew it to the t-shirt.  It was amazing how cute the dresses came out.  Our work has been progressing at each house.  At Miss Sandra’s and Mr. Nate’s house, we have finished the floors in the bedroom and worked ...

Hattiesburg Weekly Report 10-21-17

This past week, week 3, in Hattiesburg was a real busy one.  We are still working on the home of Nathanial and Sandra, but were also given another home to finish.  The work at Nathanial and Sandra’s home progressed with the floors being sanded in preparation of a new polypropylene finish.  Gene, Gene, Sharon, and Mary Ann, all worked for three straight days sanding the floors.  The wooden floors are at least sixty years old.  After sanding off the old finish, and a lot of paint and sheetrock ...

Oklahoma Disaster Rebuilding Fall 2017

The Oklahoma Disaster Response session began October 2 in Moore, Oklahoma.  The local DR staff have more than 60 work-sites funded.  Many of these homes have been waiting two years for assistance from recovery from storms and flooding.  The first two weeks our NOMADS have done amazing work.  We have worked with sheetrock, painting, laying laminate flooring, hanging kitchen cabinets, etc.  We have worked in Oklahoma City, Mustang and Norman.  It is heart warming to see the homeowners so grateful ...

Week 2 in Hattiesburg was another productive week.  We are continuing our work at the home of Sandra and Nathaniel.  Nathaniel has been over several times working on the outside of the home.  He is a professional stucco man.  He does great work.  Sandra is excited about getting back in her home after being away from it for over eight months. The week of August 28 - 31, 2017 in Lumberton, NC Gene and I received a call on Sunday, August 27 from Dave and Cathy Dieter asking us if we had room for them on the team. Of course we said yes! They joined us Monday evening and started working on Tuesday. We put in bathroom vanities, trimmed out the bathrooms and laundry rooms. (We are working on two houses next door to each other). The week of August 21 to 24th in Lumberton After the team left on August 18 Gene and I moved to the mobile home park where the Nomads will be staying. Tom and Betty, Mark and Debbie and Bryant and Jackie came in on Saturday. We worked on the same house in Fairmont and started on the house next door. Week of August 14-17, 2017 The team finished L & V's home on Tuesday. We started another house and put in drywall, paneling and painted the bathroom. Morris went and helped put in sewage pipes at the mobile home park where the Nomads will be staying for the rest of the project. Every afternoon the team would all gather at Karen and Morris' rig to relax and discuss the day. We all went out to have pizza on Tuesday evening and went out on Thursday for Mexican.
